The alternator and voltage regulator are only 3 months old. The battery only six months old. I took the battery to get tested and it showed it was fine so they charged it. i didnt leave the lights on or anything like that. it is an older car who doesnt like the wet rainy weather we have been having. Do you think it will make it for a few days til i can get it to the garage?

Dead Car Battery Causes

Several possibilites here. You could have a bad battery, or a bad alternator, or a short in the wiring. The battery can be checked with a load tester. If it is good, then use a voltage tester and measure the battery voltage across the terminals with the engine running. You should see something near 13.5V or a little more. If not, then it is your alternator. If the alternator is good then it is time to put an ammeter in series with the battery leads and check out the current drain. Start pulling fuses one at a time and see which one cuts the current drain. That would be the circuit when the trouble lies. Get a wiring diagram of the circuit and start tracing it out.

If all else fails, then take it in to an automotive electric shop and have them trouble shoot the problem.

good luck.

There can be several problems, please let me mention those to you. Lets have the battery itself checked, remove the battery from the vehicle and take it to your mechanic to have it load tested. This test will be more accurate with the battery out of the vehicle and when it has set, perferibly overnight. If the battery checks to be ok, then put it back in the vehicle and be sure that all connections are clean and tight. If problem persist, I would have the charging system tested. I have noted that you said the alternator was fine, but what method of testing it was done? If a voltmeter was used, that will only determine its voltage output. A complete charge system test has to be done with a load tester with the engine running, which I would recommend just to erase any doubt. .That test will cause the alternator to "kick in" when put under a load and then register its voltage and amperage output. Your mechanic can do this, or you can go to your local autozone and they will do it for free. If that test checks out fine and you still have the same problems, I would then turn my attention to the starter. A bad starter can cause a person to think that they have nothing more than a dead battery. If you can remove it yourself, do so and take it to have it tested. I do believe with the problems you are describing, your going to find that the starter is bad

Somethings draining this battery if you had it tested the right way. I would start looking for a short (a bare wire touching metal) cigarette lighters sometimes get stuck in. Have you had a radio or other accesory add recently? Sometimes they're hooker up wrong and put on a always live connection meaning that even when you turn it off its using the battery. Until you find the problem you should invest in a "trickle charger" a box that plugs into the house electric and clips onto the battery and keeps the battery "hot"

Try taking the '-' cable loose every evening and put it back in the morning . This will tell you if the car is draining the battery overnight of if you have a bad battery. (The battery should not be dead in the morning if it is OK)

This happened to my once, and the cause was a little light that turned on when you opened the hood. I had accidentally popped the hood release, and forgot to close the hood completely. The light drained the battery.

it may not be the battery, it may be the alternater. if the alternater is not charging the battery that is the problem. go have the battery checked. you could also take a battery cable loose and if the car stalls out then its your alternater. it does not matter how old the alternater is. i have bought new alternaters and they are no good. try taking the battery cable loose, see what happens
