Yesterday his eyes were half-open, floating in the water, legs down in water. Today, his eyes are closed and sitting on floating sponge, legs drawn into shell. If I touch him, his skin is soft and retracts (not rigid.) I read somewhere that if the water is cool (not 80+ degrees) or they are about to reproduce/mate, the slider turtle may go into hibernation. Is this true? If so, how long do they hibernate? Can I bring him out of hibernation with a warming lamp? SHOULD I bring him out of hibernation or is this part of the 'cycle of life'?

If your slider is acting sluggish, and expecially if it is eating less than usual, that's a good sign that it is hibernating. it's best not to try and bring him out of it; sliders are supposed to hibernate. it's also pretty hard to do, if there is any natural sunlight at all in the room. the slider will know what season it is, no matter how long you keep on your warming light.

Red-eared Sliders hibernate over the winter at the bottom of ponds or shallow lakes.

If your turtle keeps her eyes closed, they are swollen, and eventually she refuses to eat.. Suspect an eye infection.

Hibernation occurs when they are hiding in a thick layer of mud. A hibernating turtle will try to prevent you from pulling on a leg, while a dead turtle is limp.

I do not think your turtle is hibernating.
