The Reds' bullpen last year was the baseball equivalent of a toxic waste dump. I remember listening to starter Bronson Arroyo pitch into the 10th inning of a tie game because the Reds simply had no one in the bullpen that they could trust. Francisco has got to improve their relief corps and that is what it costs.
BTW, someone mentioned Eric Gagne. He is probably standing outside a Shaw's Market parking lot somewhere in New England with a handwritten cardboard sign "Will close for food" which is why Cordero is able to claim the price tag that he did. Wait till Chad Cordero becomes available.

Let me start by saying this is a solid acquisition... however, this is a guy who just 2 seasons ago posted an era close to 5.00 with texas, he has put up solid numbers for milwaukee but i think a 4 yr deal and money close to 12mil per season is asking a lot. heres a guy making more than billy wagner, nearly as much as mariano rivera, more than jason isringhausen and 2 times what trevor hoffman makes.. you talk about guys who have maintained consistency over a long period of time, and this guy is making more than or close to what all the guys i mentioned make... with that said, its a good signing for the reds, it can and WILL help shore up a bullpen that blew nearly half of its saves last season...
Now on the relief pitcher front, i would think its tough to give free agent relief pitchers more than 3 years... given the instability of relief pitchers and how nothing is guaranteed with them year after year... look at the silly contract the white sox gave scott linebrink.. 4 yrs - 21 million... heres a guy who has NEVER pitched in the AL, and hes getting a guaranteed 4 yr deal for 21 mil... not only has he never pitched in the AL, but his statistics have declined each of the past 3 seasons where his era has gone up, walks have increased and k's have gone down in each of those seasons.. and his opponent batting avg has also gone up.. *not good signs for relievers*
now i know we arent talking about linebring, but in making a point 4 yr deals are risky for relief pitchers... I think its a good signing NOW, but i think over the course of 4 yrs, it could be risky.. i could be wrong, but just a hunch (look at the deal the blue jays signed to bj ryan

The Reds have now bolstered one in each of their weakest aspects because of the fact that Cordero will step in and be a competent nearer. of direction they overpaid, yet you should do this in many situations with a view to go forward. Now they should pay interest on their beginning intensity and bench. solid acquisition for Cincinnati!

How do mean ?? Cordero is a great closer, but a 4 yr deal is risky. Brewers offered him 42 mil. and he said he really liked Milw. and the young team, but it just shows that it is ALWAYS about the money.

Yeah, they need starting pitching and middle relief more than a closer. What good does a closer do if you can't get to the ninth with the lead?

Well, he's already overpaid. A reliever with a 2.98 ERA doesn't deserve an eight figure salary. Only the elite closers, like Rivera or Gagne in the prime years of their careers should get that kind of money.

No, the Reds have not had a closer in quite a while. They need a bullpen.

you know how every trading deadline you have a couple of small market teams trying to dump high salary player? usually you hear things like "florida marlins are dying to dump mike lowells 9 mil salary" this is one of those times i laugh and just outright know they will not keep cordero the whole time. they will end up dumping him when they are way out of playoff race. dont they know small market teams need to raise their own players, then trade them for package of prospects, before they reach free agency? what a joke
