I guess the Good Lord protects fools, because I am still alive. I had some Aluminum parts I needed to clean, and had read that muriatic acid would do the job. Placed the parts in a container in the back of my shed, THINKING it would need to soak for a day or so. WELL, the reaction was EXTREMELY violent, rapidly frothing over the container and with CLOUDS of "smoke" that drove me from the shed.
I managed to get it under control, and poured several pounds of BAKING SODA on the resulting mess.

IT has quit foaming, and SEEMS inert, BUT WHAT DO I HAVE NOW THAT I HAVE MIXED MURIATIC ACID AND BAKING SODA?????

Muriatic acid is just hydrochloric acid(HCl) and baking soda is sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3).

HCl + NaHCO3 --> NaCl + H2O + CO2

So, in other words, you made salt water. It can go down the drain.

If there's any white solid, it's probably just excess sodium hypochlorite. It can also go down the drain or just in the garbage.

Muriatic Acid Baking Soda

Pour some more baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) on it. If it still doesn't fizz, you're good. You want to have an excess of it, to ensure that you have an alkaline solution before you dump it down.

Never mix aluminum with acids or strong alkalis. It generates hydrogen, which could have ignited in the heat of the reaction and caused a major fire.

Next time, clean aluminum with a weaker acid (like acetic acid - vinegar) and a scouring agent.
The only metals that can hold up to strong acids are copper, gold, silver and platinum. Anything else will react! Aluminum reacts more violently than iron or steel.

okay that guy is just sad. you don't sound hot you sound like you'ree killing yourself. as someone who has been in and out of eating disorder treatment centers for seven years (i'm 18) i totally know what youre talking about. have you ever sought out treatment before? it sounds like you have a pretty severe problem (not a compliment). youre drinking the diet soda to fill yourself up becauseyou'ree starving and your body has turned on survival mode making you obsessed with the notion of eating. You can die from not eating enough, and i assume the aspartame and acid in the soda can make your stomach feel terrible. I would suggest either nourishing yourself more (which is virtually impossible to do by yourself). Get help, it can save your life. You we're given a life, don't waste it on counting calories and obsessing over food. I know it seems impossible to get healthy, but its not the end of the world. you'd be amazed at how wonderful it feels to wake up and not be controlled by food.
