i would say talk to your landlord. Maybe if he/she has a waiting list of people to take your apartment he will be more understanding considering the situation.

You'll have to follow your lease and pay off the amount they require for you to get out of your lease early. It's usually a month's extra rent and they keep your deposit, but this varies depending on the landlord. The only other option you have is to find someone who is willing to take over your lease for you. I understand where you are coming from and I'd want to get out of that area immediately also- talk to your landlord and let him know what happened but you will most likely still have to pay the penalties stated in the lease.
When I still rented, someone was held-up at gunpoint (I didn't even live in a bad area) and I moved out immediately but, of course, had to pay the penalties.

Also, even though the robber said that to you- I hope to God you called the police. Most robbers just threaten these things and do not go through with them, but if you feel unsafe go stay with a friend for a few days.

You signed a contract. You picked the place to live. You feel unsafe.? Pay off the balance of the lease or find someone who will pick up the balance and you are home free if he keeps his end of the bargain. If you find the person who will assume your obligation, make sure that you discuss it with the landlord and have your name erased and the new tenant's inserted.
