Log on with admin rights.

Locate the "Hosts" file. On XP it's located at:

C:\
Windows\
System32\
Drivers\
Etc\

Right click the hosts file (it has no extension) and select Properties from the context menu. Uncheck the Hidden and Read Only attributes if they are selected.

Double-click the file. You'll be prompted to choose a program to edit the file. Choose Notepad. There should be one entry in the file, like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Note: The gap is a tab character. You can use a tab or a space to separate the entries you are going to make below. Either one will work properly.

If there are any others, leave them alone. Some anti-spyware programs add sites to this file for known malware.

Just below the line shown above, add another line like this:

127.0.0.1

Where is the site you wish to block. For example, to block access to UTube enter:

127.0.0.1 www.utube.com

Close and save the file. Reapply the Hidden and Read Only attributes if you changed them earlier.

The IP address 127.0.0.1 is the "loopback adaptor" on your computer, meaning that it's your computer itself. Anyone trying to go to any host listed in the Hosts file this way will get a blank screen or an error message.

Keep in mind that this setting applies globally. Nobody will be able to access any sites listed in it. If you wanted to you could write a little .cmd script that would allow you to change back and forth to different versions of the Hosts file if you wanted to be able to access the site yourself.
