I'm going to go to London for the weekend.

Is there a travel card that I can get so that I can travel on the tube and buses all weekend?

If so, how much does it cost?

Thanks!

There is a smartcard called Oyster. You can pick it up at any tube station or Transport for London ticket shop (typcially a newsagent identified with the TfL ticket shop logo).

When you purchase the Oyster card, you can load it up with money for Pay as you Go travel. The money is effectively treated as pre payment for travel but funds on the card are deducted as you travel.

You can purchase a daily or 3 day travelcard for a weekend but you need to know which London zones you will be travelling in. With Pay as you Go travel, the fares deducted will be based on your travel and will be capped at 50p less than the equivalent travelcard.

If you decide to get an Oyster card for Pay as you Go Travel, you will be charged a £3 refundable deposit - it will be returned along with any remaining funds on the card when you return the card to a tube station.

Added note: Forgot to say that if you get an Oyster card, you need to have the card touch the yellow card readers by the gates at the start and end of each journey.

Your best option would be to buy an Oyster card (available at any London Underground station) for £3 which will give you cheaper travel on overground trains, buses and the underground. You then can put any sum of money on it and present it when you use public transport and the appropriate amount fo money for the fare is taken off your total. If you travel after 9.30 am on a week day and anytime on a Saturday and Sunday you can get unlimited travel within travel zones 1-4 for £5.30. Unless you are going to outer London this should be sufficient, especially as most of the major sites are inside zone 1.
