An abolitionist is a person who supports the idea of abolishing slavery (think President Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclaimation, or in current events people who fight for civil rights). As for when slavery began in the colonies, I believe it started in the early 1600's when the English settled in Virginia, but I would look through your history text for more specific information.
Good Luck!

An abolitionist was someone who wanted to aboish slavery. The first shipload of Africans for sale arrived in Jamestown in 1619--before the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth and, ironically, about three weeks after the Virginia House of Burgesses, the first elected governing body in the British colonies, was formed. However, these people were merely indentured servants who were freed after they served the terms of indenture. I could look up "first slave ships North America" for you on a search site (like Yahoo!), but you can just as easily do that yourself.

An abolitionist is someone who is against the institution of slavery.

According to Wikipedia slavery unofficially began in the colonies in Virginia when Anthony Johnson, a Black former indentured servant, sued to have another indentured servant - also Black - made his servant for life.

More information: Slavery first legalized in Massachusetts Colony in 1641.
