And why do they insist on using and saying cut and dry instead of cut and dried as it really is?

It has to do with first language being dynamic and it does change, and second that people are often linguistically lazy, refusing to say things clearly. Besides, "but naked" is kind of funny . . . and may actually be more clear than the term "buck naked."

Scholars are in disagreement about which came first "butt" or "buck." In fact, both have come to mean the same thing -- completely naked. The word buck can mean "totally." Some believe buck replaced butt because it was more mannerly or politically correct.
