My 14 year old son wants to build a computer. He is very good with computers, and understands how they work. He has researched everything and says he will use his own money to buy the parts, totaled up at around $670. I dont want him to buy it and end up not being able to put it together. I myself have also read the manuals on how to build computers and they seemed to be understandable. Should I let him do it?

You have to let him try. If my son was that confident about building his own computer, and especially paying for all of it, I would be the proudest parent alive. Just tell him that when he does it, and it all works properly, because i am sure he knows how to research for question he may have, that he doesn't says 'I told you so' too many times.

Wow, if he is versed in the subject and you have read the bookd then give him the chance. Worse case would be that he has to reinstall something. I added ram memory to my main computer, had a problem, but after I called the store where I bought the ram they realized I only put it in backwards. Was easy to fix and no problems with the computer...or nothing was ruined anyway. With no interupptions and paying extreme attention I would let him do it....

im 15 and i just ordered my pieces. make sure that he has all the stuff to be compatible with each other. this is basically all the stuff you should ask him:
-does the socket of the processor and motherboard match
-Does the ram match the motherboard
-does the motherboard match the case
-does the PSU match the motherboard and case
-last but not least, does it have integrated graphics or is the graphic card compatible with the motherboard and the PSU

Hope this helped!

My dad did this once and he had some trouble. I would wait and see what else he can build in the electronic section. It is mainly up to you when he should be able to do this.

I put my first one together with minimal assistance at 13, they've only gotten easier since then. I would be pretty surprised if he couldn't figure it all out and make it work.

Use Linux. It's better and free-er. I'd go with free, faster, and more secure over prettier...
