I have been homeless 4 times in my life because of Alcoholism. I now have a chance to write a 10 to 15 page story on being homeless on the streets of Chicago & being an alcoholic. It is for a " Free Newspaper " in Chicago. It is read by about 1,500,000 every week ( it is a weekly newspaper )

Should I do this thing? I have been told that I am a good writer, I only write about the truth, meaning things that I have experienced. Certain people ( College Instructors ) that I know, say go for it, it will bennifit a great many people. Example ....... the Yuppies who read the paper will be able to better understand the homeless situation etc etc ..... What do you, my yahoo answer friends think about this?? Any & all advice is welcome. I humbly thank you ..... Jerry ....... p.s. I did in fact suffer frostbite in January 2005, causing me to lose 1/2 of my right leg and 1/2 of my left foot.....today I am clean and sober & living in Southern Wisconsin. Received my " GED "

I think you should do it, Jerry. You are such a talented, beautiful writer. Sharing your story, like other answers said, can help many understand those who suffer from alcoholism. Also, for yourself, telling your story, in a formal and public written piece, can be a very healing experience. I have no doubt that you would touch many people through your story. Good luck and please let me know what you decide, Jerry.

Definitely, definitely do it Jerry. If more people understood some of the causes of homelessness, and some of the effects, then it would happen less frequently. None of us is ever more than a few steps away from homelessness - a run of bad luck is all it takes - and yet so many act as if they are immune from it ever happening to them. Please do this Jerry, and email me a copy of the article. x

Well done to you. I think you should write for the paper as asked. You have first hand knowledge of alcoholism and life as a homeless person.

Go for it, you have something to say that people will want to listen to you.

All the very best to you and good wishes for 2008. x

I would definitely take advantage of this opportunity, it could really allow others to see how their choices may impact their lives and the lives of others for good and bad. It also shows that as hard as it may be, with perseverance, you can overcome.
