Three Friends

Three friends, Andrew, Bernard, and Claude, leave at the same time and place to go to town, 8 miles away. Andrew starts on foot. Bernard takes Claude in his car. After a certain time Claude gets out of the car and goes on, walking. Bernard drives back to Andrew, takes him in the car, and drives him to town. All three arrive at the same time. Andrew and Claude both walk at a constant speed of 6 mph. Bernard drives at a constant speed of 30 mph. How long did the trip last?

If Andrew walks for a hours and then transfered b hours then
6a+30b=8
|-a->|---------b--------->|
because velocity * time = space
If Claude walks for c hours and then transfered d hours then
30c+6d=8
|---------c--------->|-d->|
but,
a+b=t
c+d=t
And Bernard drives for c hours Claude and b hours for Andrew, but delays 2 times the distance he left Claude to get Andrew (c-a) hours, so
30b+30c-60(c-a)=8
|---------c--------->|
|_____|<---c-a-------|
|_____|----c-a------>|
|_____|--------b--------->|
Solving the equations we have : t=28/75 hours or 22.4 minutes

1st figure out how many miles ANDREW walked first. then multiply it by 6mph. 2nd figure out how long Bernard drove CLAUDE. multiply that # by 30 mph. 3rd subtract the # of miles Claude was driven by Bernard from 8 miles. then multiply that # by 6mph. 4th figure out how much time it took BERNARD to drive back to get Andrew. 5th add all of your results together.
i'm in algebra so i know how to do this. here is your process.
hope it helps. good luck. :D

h^2-(a^2-6a+9) Multiply -a million through each and every term interior the parenthesis (a^2-6a+9). h^2+(-(a^2)-(-6a)-(9)) finished the multiplication of -a million through each and every term interior the parenthesis. h^2+(-a^2+6a-9) get rid of the parenthesis around the expression -a^2+6a-9. h^2-a^2+6a-9
