He will have to pay some fees, but there are some divorce lawyers that are very reasonable. Hey, if he wants the divorce bad enough, he needs to pay to be free.

If he files without having a attorney represent him depending on the state, about $100. If he is unemployed he could get a waiver so he won't have to pay for the paperwork. This is called Pro-Se in most states. It means filing for divorce and you are representing yourself. Call local county services and see if they can help and offer price ranges. Usually for an attorney, the retainer is about $500 and up and that's the low price range. Good luck.

You can get the paperwork on line from Nolo Press. Assuming both parties agree and no children are an issue then just the filing fee should be about it.

i just looked into this last week as i have been seperated nearly 2 years now.
I shopped around and for a NO complications divorce... ie, no kids or property to split you are looking at around £450.00
If he starts divorce proceedings, it is also possible to get the costs paid for by his partner, if he is on low income, but his solicitor can advise on this.
Most large solicitors offices also offer 30 minutes of FREE advice before you decide to commit.
Hope this helps

Divorce is cheap when there is no conflict or disagreement.
The lawyer and the feminist have destroyed the American family, both black and white, to make money. Most divorces are unnecessary, stemming from low conflict situations.
The lawyer will make a lot of money from any conflict.

He can just let it go though and not fight any claim. If he wants to fight then see a Solicitor and I suspect fees would be negotiable. I feel it much depends upon what he could lose.

Do it yourself. You can go down to the court house file the papers.
Fees will be court cost, and if his spouse agrees they might be able to split the cost....
