The Pied Piper Of Hamelin, a poem by Robert Browning, is allegedly about the abduction of children from a small town of the same name in Germany. Another version of the story is by the Grimm Brothers. Townspeople promised a visiting ratcatcher that they would pay him. After he lured the rats to the river by playing music on his pipe, the townspeople did not pay him. He went away angry but returned to seek his revenge by playing music and luring the children away from their parents who were in church. The incident is said to have taken place in 1284.

The poem itself was written by Robert Browning. It was based on a German legend. There is a stained glass window somewhere that suggests a great tragedy involving a town's children but there is no concrete evidence to support any particular theory about what really happened. The Pied Piper story was also immortalized by the Brothers Grimm.
