No, they only pretended to be. No rights for women and slavery was legal, so that doesn't exactly make us a country where liberty and justice for all mean just that. What it meant was liberty and justice for all white males.

Look at our country the past 6-7 years. Constantly divided and everyone fighting tooth and nail for their own justice.

For the most part, they have tried very hard to reach that goal but, like every other country, it is made up of individuals so is subject to loop holes and corruption.
