ok, idk what exactly it does, but it wont start up. my friend was tellin me something about an xp boot disc. what i thought he was saying was, this or, this along with something else will delete everything off your computer, even viruses, and you would reboot windows xp. so, if she bought another disc would it possibly fix her computer? if so, please send me a link to show me exactly what shes buying, and where she could get it (including ebay)

also she was wondering if she bought a new hard drive, would that fix it?

thanks

When this computer is started, does it go to the BIOS dos screens? If it does, then you may be able to repair this problem by running the Windows Repair Console. To do this you will need an XP installation CD. You do not need to purchase one because you are not going to "install" XP, just repair it. So if you can borrow an XP disk, here is what you do.

USING THE WINDOWS REPAIR CONSOLE

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

Your gateway should come with a "operating system disc" from gateway. just pop it in and use the reboot option not the restart as normal. once you get to the reboot screen just follow directions and it is pretty much like how you first get your computer to work.
