Certain NFL teams do, certain don't. Interesting that two of the best teams, New England and Indy, are more often than not in the shotgun.

the NFL likes to stagnate in the pro set offense. supposedly there is an advantage in run blocking with being under center because the center doesn't have to concentrate on the snap so much. where ever you heard that could have been wrong. it might be more the type of shotgun offense. not that many NFL teams run the spread formation. 4 and 5 WOs doesn't work as well when the receivers are covered better than in college. this is why Spurrier didn't do so well in the NFL.

Most shotgun college offenses are not build around complex reading of the defense. It is much harder to read a defense int he NFL than it is in the college game. Therefore, QB's who run "simple" shotgun college offenses are at a disadvantage when it comes to running complex NFL offensive schemes that require reading the defense and the possible need to change the play at the line of scrimmage.

In general the defensive and offensive lines have parity these days. the qb is generally safer in the pocket relying on those big horses to hold them back long enough to let him through. pats have the very best oof linemen to protect brady. college is different. the often do not have such skilled and awesome offensive lines so the quarteback needs to be very mobile and ready to scat left or right cause the defensive lines shoot right past the off.linemen or else the quick linebacks are racing through. mick vick was the greatest ever doing that but was not good for the falcons overall. nfl rules and teams are designed for pocket passers.
fran tarkenington was the last successful nfl scrambler. he was unique because he could throw very accurately going left or right in a full run. he wasquite entertaining -- the great ga.bulldog of 1960..

in the nfl, if you go into shotgun, youre almost certain to pass. this way the defense sees it and can commit to the pass, causeing less of a chance for a completion.
in college, the defenses are not so good, so quarterbacks can use shotgun, giving them more time to throw, and dont have to worry about defense committing to the pass becasue the defenses are not as often good enough to stop the pass despite this

It depends on the offense. Favre used to not use the shotgun formation, not they use it quite often.
