There are a number of ways to add/subtract mixed numbers.
WAY 1: Converting into an Improper fraction
6 1/5 - 2 2/3 becomes 31/5 - 8/3
Multiply denominators to get common denominator: (3 • 5 = 15), then cross multiply to get numerators:
(31 • 3) - (8 • 5)/15 ==> (93 - 40)/15 ==> 53/15 (<-- answer)
To turn 53/15 into a mixed number, divide 53 by 15. The remainder will be your numerator and the denominator stays the same:
53 ÷ 15 = 3 r8 ==> 3 8/15
WAY 2: Direct Subtraction.
Step 1: Find Common Denominator
Since we've established it was 15, we'll use it:
6 3/15 - 2 10/15
Since we can't subtract 3/15 from 10/15, we'll need to "borrow" from the "big number":
6 3/15 ==> 5 3/15 (+ 15/15)* ==> 5 18/15
(*NOTE: since we took 1 from the 6, it became 5: [6 - 1 = 5] and we made 1 = 15/15 because 15 is the common denominator).
Now we can subtract:
5 18/15 - 2 10/15
3 8/15
Hope it helped :-)

1. convert both the fractions 31/5 - 8/3 =
2. multiply through by the common denominator in this case 3 x 5 = 15 -> (93 - 40) / 15 =
3. then solve, simplify and change back to mixed

Turn them into improper fractions:
31/5-8/3
15 is the common denominator:
(31*3)/(5*3)-(8*5)/(3*5)=
93/15-40/15=
53/15=
3 8/15
