I live in a cold city where it get's down to -35 in the winter. Does it matter if I store tools in the garage that are battery operated?

If you only buy power tools with nickel cadmium batteries you won't have to worry about it. They are good to -40 centigrade. You also get the added advantage of better life between recharges.

Batteries have less power when they are cold. And the lube in the gears gets very stiff, cutting down on power even more. If you don't plan to use it, the cold will not hurt it at all. Batteries like being stored in the cold.

I'd bring the battery's in the house. Put them away from small children though, and charge them once a month, or so.(Hey, I made a rhyme!)

I always keep mine inside where it is heated. Freezing batteries, especially if they are not kept fully charged, will dramatically shorten the life.
