RIGHT and WRONG is written on every heart.
denying facts doesn't change them, and some people are just too wrapped up in the surrounding 3 feet of air.

Ethics does have dome founding in religion but that's hardly the exclusive basis. Some is coded in law that evolves from any number of sources. Some is just common sense.
We don't need religion to have sound ethics. In fact, many religions preach practices that are clearly unethical when viewed outside of the religious context. Excellent examples of this are found in many major religions, in particular the treatment of women as chattels, servents or the source of all evil and temptation.
Ethics can best be described as doing the right thing when nobody is looking and when you could get away with doing the wrong thing with impunity.

You need to specify what kind of ethics. Ethics and morals are sometimes confused, but they are not the same thing. There are many kinds of ethics. There are professional ethics, social ethics, personal ethics, and **cough** political ethics.
Social and personal ethics are most closely related, but can vary from person to person, and region to region.
Professional ethics are those things described as "right" based on your professional function. For example, in medicine, ethics are defined by their relation to what is best for the patient. In law, and politics ethics are more ambiguous. I guess you can tell I don't have much respect for lawyers or politicians.
If you specify what type of ethics you are referring to, perhaps someone with insight into that specific kind of ethics could answer your question.

We don't need religion for anything. Even atheists have ethical reasoning. Tuning in to the spirit will tell us all we need to know about good sense ethics.
