First of all, are you sure that it was the food from that restaurant that made you ill? Did any other member of your party eat the same food that you did and also get sick? We you treated at a hospital and actually diagnosed with food poisoning, or did you just get sick and recover on your own?

Food poisoning usually takes longer than a couple of hours after consuming the food to show symptoms. If it was food poisoning, it could have been from something you are up to 48 hours prior to the onset of symptoms!

You can contact the health department to let them know of your concerns, but there is no way (especially if you were not treated) to prove it was food poisoning, a food allergy, or just a bug that you caught coincidentally

It seems food poisoning in America has gotten quite bad in recent years. Last year I had food poisoning after eating in a Chinese chain restaurant. I ended up in the emergency room after an agonizing 10 days. Other family members have said they also have gotten sick on food.
Unless there are a lot of people in an emergency room saying they ate at the same place I doubt there is much you can do to prove where you got sick. I would call the restaurant and talk to the manager just to let him know. It has only been 3-4 years that food poisoning seems to have become common. The gov. must not be testing the quality of food like they once did.

You could just tell them as a heads up, what the item was that you ate and if anybody else in your party experienced the same thing. This happened to me at a birthday dinner a few years ago, but I didn't do anything, although I was told that the restaurant may refund or comp. the meal?

well this is america... and if someone can sue McDonalds for having hot coffee.. then you can surely sue that restaurant for making you sick.

Can you prove it? Sue them. They should at least pay for your meal.
