i have a dvd quality video, about 40 mb that i want to upload to youtube but it looks so shitty i might as well have downsized the quality 90 percent myself!!!

is there a way to avoid this?? aol video keeps the quality so i know youtube doesnt have to do this!!!

If they don't reduce the file size, users would be waiting all day to view the video being downloaded. They re-encode to reduce file size which eventually reduces quality.

Try changing the quality manually through your actual video's watch later/expand/etc bar, sometimes my videos load with the lower qualities even though the higher quality is present - if that's not the problem, try a different method of uploading. I use Windows Movie Maker on Windows 7 and once my video is uploaded there, I go to "convert into HD video" on the save movie option. Upload that converted file with YouTube, done with great quality.

You aren't paying to strore you videos on Youtube. They have to pay for the servers themselves. Just be happy it's free and you get the quality that you get.

To keep the video quality, I suggest Divx. Stage6.divx.com is a great place to upload--but the videos have to be divx files. You download the Divx pack. Divx files are really compressed size wise, but have great video quality. For non-copyrighted stuff, stage6 is where it's at!
