Very provocative question - DO YOU THINK that England will EVENTUALLY BE BANNED from such EVENTS AS the World Cup? --- I'm under the mistaken impression that England is going to be banned sooner or later .... Why ??!! Because they can't perform on the field? That's too much to ask for .... Because of their fans ? HAH ! That would be a first !! I suppose banning true fans of the game will accomplish a wider audience! Who am i kidding?! This whole post is absurd ... Football has always had supporters and some tend to get a lot more involved than the average fan - So they're passionate about the game !! If it's violence you're worried about - try a caged environment, or private viewing booths or a STRINGENT security system that lets only those with nothing to hide enter .... You get the idea by now, don't ya?

Saw of a player that died in a game in an Arena League(think it was on of the independent ones), I think it was a heart attack, but beyond that I don't know of any dying at a game for a LONG, LONG time. With summer practices Heat Stroke has taken a few as was said.

the media doesn't dwell on that. many on down to the high school and pop warner leagues have had deaths. most often it is heathstroke or undetected heart defects that trigger the deaths. but there have been many deaths cause by a snapped neck. i was watching one college game at georgia tech where it happened. have seen it in the nfl. a couple were carried off the field and died latter. the rule on "face masking" came as a result of a death. many were permenately injured and could never walk again. in the old days when face masks were beginning to be introduced some players refuse to wear them. then there was no rule against bulldogging anyone down by their face mast. would not be that hard to break someone's neck like that.
the short answer is YES. many still in wheelchairs and there is certain to be more. they rarely have to mention that. so they don't. bad for advertising.

Chuck Hughes of the Detroit Lions died of a heart attack during a game against the Chicago Bears in 1972. It is the only death recorded during an NFL game.
Al Lucas of the Los Angeles franchise in the Arena League died of a spinal cord injury in a game in 2005.
Korey Stringer's heatstroke death has been mentioned. Thomas Herrion, a lineman with San Francisco, died of a heart attack after a 2005 pre-season game against Denver.
In 1979, J.V. Cain, a tight end with the St Louis Cardinals, died of a heart attack in training camp.

I don't know about in a game, but there have been a handful of deaths in recent years in pro, college, and even high school during practices. Usually during summer practices and tied in with heatstroke.

In the late 1800's players died playing football.... They created the NCAA to regulate football to prevent deaths... They enforced rules for pads ect..
and recently a player fell on another player and killed him.....
There are also heat strokes which kill a certain number of players each year....mostly high school
