It actually has happened in the NFL, twice.

Net yardage:
–7 Seattle vs. Los Angeles, Nov. 4, 1979
–5 Denver vs. Oakland, Sept. 10, 1967

The record in college is -47, set by Syracuse vs. Penn State in 1947.
