Sharks eat shark food, hummingbirds eat hummingbird food ... sharks don't eat hummingbird food and vice versa. Although there is overlap between species, not all things others species seek are the same as members of the same species. So, it is the intraspecies competition that is most intense as members of a species compete only for all the same stuff.

they compete for the same resources.

e.g. Giraffes can eat leaves on the top of trees. Zebras can't. So the tasty mouthful of leaves giraffe #1 has it's eye on can get snagged by another giraffe but not by a zebra. Also zebras don't mate with giraffes and giraffes not with zebras. No competition for mates either.
