I used to be willing to help anyone with anything. It was the way I was raised; bring home the hungry, help the neighbors.
But with time I realized the people I was helping were just using me to do what they should have been doing all along.
As I began to look around and see that I was being taken advantage of I really got discouraged and disappointed.
There are all sorts of agencies set up by various gov't to take care of needs.
Our taxes pay for section 8 housing, food stamps, medical care for those earning at the poverty level, transportation and then we are to feel guilty that these needs even exist for these people that have nothing.
It goes on for generations
Religious groups need to have people to help. It makes them feel good to have people in need. This just makes them enablers and codependent.
I help only when I see the immediate need.
I stop to change a tire for a woman, told a blind person which way the traffic was going and walked him across the street
On one occasion I had the opportunity to follow a beggar that stands at the corner of a freeway and a main street for 5 blocks to his NICE MOTOR HOME. I was shocked.

Most of the time; but not always. Some people are very good at playing the "damsel in distress", or the opposite, whatever it is referencing a fellow. One doesn't like getting burned.

But yes, if the need seems genuine, I certainly will. Aren't most people - willing to help?

it always depends on what it is. sometimes I'm willing to help if I know you long enough to know your personality, sometimes I'm not willing to help if I don't know you that well or if I think you're weird.
