Most of the other answerers here have hit one of the nails on the head: Define "Secret".

^_^ The stuff we know about and can do a head count of, by definition, can't really be a "secret" or that "well hidden". Honestly, you can do Web Searches these days and find *hundreds to millions* of results not just about people *talking about* the "New World Order" or about the "Freemasons" or about the Conspiracy Theory of the Week....

You can find lots of Web Search results that are *spam* containing the keywords. That should tell you something. It's not a secret if the spammers have hijacked the keywords, ok?

My take on it is this: It's rather like the situation surrounding Area 51. It's still supposed to be top secret, but everyone and his brother knows about it. Yet it's still there. Why?

Because the *real* secret bases need a decoy. They need a target to distract the public imagination (and discredit "kooks" who may otherwise be on to something). The real work that Area 51 once did, is most likely being done *elsewhere*, at locations that actually *are* secrets.

So if you find a real secret online these days, let us know. ^_^

Oh, and the other nail to hit:

Define "Society". ^_^ Under the broader definition of the words, *I'm* a member of a Secret Society online. Me and my buddies online do have rare and unusual hobbies that we like to pursue. And it isn't like we even *try* to hide things, it's just that our thing is so rare that most folks *still* haven't spotted it yet.

But we aren't out to conquer the world (well, not most of us and not in reality). We hardly even *try* to keep things a secret. And most of my peers in my "secret society" would argue bitterly and rip you a new one in the process if you suggested that we all had a "common agenda" because really, we don't have one and are terribly diverse.

So....yeah, I doubt me and my peers online *count*, either as a "secret" or as a "society", according to the less broad, but commonly propagated definition of the term as used by conspiracy theorists. ^_^

My point? I think trying to do a census of this sort is futile. I think you'd be better off studying *one specific* secret or interest and seeing "who shows up". After a while, you'll get to know or at least recognize some society members, and from there, you have something to work with.

I am a 32 degree mason, belong to scottish and york rites, Knights Templar, and a Shriner.
Becoming a mason was the best decision I have made so far in my life.
Freemasonry is not even close to being a dangerous society but instead it has evolved from an ancient "Union" like the unions we have today that protects the employees that are members of unions.
Today masonry is a brotherhood that teaches a system of inner government that prepares young men for political office.

If you are really interested in learning about the Freemasons, there are two books I'd recommend (no insult meant by the titles): The Complete Idiot's Guide to Freemasons, and Freemasonry for Dummies. They really dispel the silly myths perpetuated by conspiracy theorists and DaVinci Code enthusiasts. It's 'way less "fun" and much more helpful and community-minded that those people would like you to believe!
