The bad thing about waiting until you are pregnant to stop is that you won't know you are pregnant for a few weeks. If you are having sex, you should stop smoking it now. Because it's always possible to get pregnant and the first three months of pregnancy are crucial. Stop now.
TO: LINDZYMILL
I am not anti-pot. I used to smoke it and think that if alcohol is legal then pot should be too.
However, I do love my children and would not do anything to jeopardize their health.
It is not that baby's fault that they are in my womb, it's mine and it is also my responsibility to care of them.

Of course it will effect your child.
For several reasons, the toxins stay in your body for sometimes several months, depending on how often you smoke. Also, what is not good for you is certainly not good for a baby, smoking one joint is equivalent to smoking four cigarettes. You also don't find out you are pregnant, usually until your second or sometimes third month, so while you are toking away, you could be pregnant already. Next, do you really want to be going through withdrawals when your are pregnant?-your body and that baby does not need that stress in your first trimester when your baby is developing all of it's vital organs. (And a pothead's lament is that there are no withdrawals-this is false, trust me, I've seen it first hand). Also, when you are a pothead, and you get pregnant, won't it be fun explaining to your OBGYN that you smoke pot regularly after it comes out in your blood test that she has you do?
FYI: The reason that there is not allot of conclusive evidence that shows the effects of Marijuana on pregnancies is because there are not very many studies on the subject.
For future thought:
Addiction is a genetic trait, and it does not seem intelligent to be passing along those types of genes...

Are you serious? Just because the baby is not born physically deformed does not mean that the cigarette smoke and alcohol did not affect the child. Most children that have asthma were born to mothers who smoked. A lot of these children also have slow development, lack control over their emotions/behaviors and have learning disabilities. If you drink or smoke during your pregnancy you are setting your child up to fail in life. I personally don't know how any mother can be so selfish. How can you do something that you know "might" hurt your child? I smoked for 13 years before I got pregnant, I know how hard it is to kick the habit, but there is no way on this planet I would continue to do something that could have a negative impact on my child, the most important thing in my world. Mother's who put themselves first from the very beginning sicken me. You are responsible for another life, act like it.

Glad you are not pregnant. However, anything that you THINK may be harmful to your baby is probably going to be harmful for you RIGHT NOW anyway. Pot may not be a "drug" to some people, but something that has mind altering effects is obviously not something you should be doing no matter if you're pregnant or not. And FYI, your boyfriend is NOT a doctor, so how would he know the effects of smoking while pregnant?? Take care of yourself right now for your future children...you'll thank youself in the long run.

Smoking marijuana prior to pregnancy will not affect the pregnancy. But as others have mentioned, bear in mind that THC metabolites can stay in your body for up to a month IF you are a chronic, daily smoker. The less you smoke, the quicker it will be metabolized out of your fat cells and leave the body.
I'm not going to pull some anti-drug rhetoric on you like others are - we all know drugs have risks and consequences, and you aren't yet pregnant so there is no reason to condemn you. I am a registered nurse, and I have quite a bit of education on the effects of drugs both before and during pregnancy, and marijuana is relatively harmless in comparison to other drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth, etc.
IF you were to use during pregnancy, the risks are very similar to smoking cigarettes, risk for preterm labor, risk for small birthweight baby, but there is NO conclusive scientific evidence that marijuana use during pregnancy leads to birth defects or other long term developmental issues. Many people claim it is linked to ADHD or other hyperactive disorders, there is conflicting evidence on this, not enough to conclusively prove a link between the two.
Please talk to your doctor prior to getting pregnant to ask them their professional opinions about drug use before and during pregnancy. They are the ones best educated in this area as opposed to anonymous strangers on the internet who will always come back with the standard reply, "drugs are bad, mmmmkay", which is not realistic nor helpful.

I never smoked or drank during my pregnancies, but my little sister smoked pot, and her son came out fine, until he started school, and he can't read....he is at a very very low reading level.
On the other hand, I have friends who smoked pot in the 80's, and all had not only beautiful kids, but highly intelligent, athletic and popular, so I can't tell you for sure.
All I know is that it is best to quit those vices before trying to conceive. With my luck, doing that stuff would cause my babies to be brain dead.

Well, of course you're not going to know you're pregnant until you're at least a few weeks pregnant. So if you continue to smoke regularly, you will be smoking while pregnant.

Absolutely it will have an effect. Those toxins stay in your body. It is stupid to think that anything you put in your body is not going to affect your overall health and the health of a future child. Glad to hear you're quitting but how about NOT getting pregnant now? You're smoking pot and not married. Hmmmm that doesn't sound like the right environment for a baby does it?
