Speculation definition from google: "guess: a message expressing an opinion based on incomplete evidence."
Basically draw a conclusion on the entire event from what you already know. For example, write about maybe the importance of it or things they should have done to make it more spectacular.

The Wiki' piece on the Gold Rush that several people gave a link to is quite good...
I think that more money changed hands in businesses that supported or supplied the miners than the miners created from gold.
My understanding is that a very few miners hit it big.

i think the question means that their weren't alot of secondary sources, so people are infering what happended during the california gold rush.
