Mrs McCann sounds Liverpudlian or Geordie, Mr McCann Scottish (Glasgow?). In both these areas people historically, working in heavy industries, had to face all sorts of difficulties, so a stoical attitude was an attitude people would adopt. If people just got emotional and knocked over by difficulties, they would not have been able to carry on effectively. Italian/Spanish/Greek/Portuguese, ie Latins, are often very emotional - perhaps due to the hot climate. So maybe it is misunderstanding (like the Louise Woodward baby shaking case in North America) and a bit of racila prejudice against Brits behind their presumption of the McCanns being guilty. What do you think ?

Julia P - true, they are very middle class now, but we often pick up attitudes from our peers at school and at play with others etc as we grow up; also family culture affects us.

I have to agree with yahooyahoo on this.
The Portuguese police made a mess of the investigation and they know it. The Portuguese press have gone out of their way to castigate this couple and some people have swallowed it all, hook line and sinker.
Who else are the PJ going to blame for their incompetent investigation but the parents. The investigation was flawed right from the start. They didn't protect the scene and vital evidence was either destroyed or lost. I am not blaming them entirely as it is not a normal situation for them and they obviously did not have enough experience to know what they were doing.
The worse culprits were the press. They were the ones who started on the parents reaction, which I might add they were coached about before hand. This sorry mess has been through people ill-advising this couple right from the start. All they wanted to do was get this as high profile as they could to stop the little girls abductors in their tracks. They tried to do the best they could with whatever means necessary and are being shot down in flames for it.

if thats the case there is nothing to argue here. she's fake. period.
and she got the husband to go along.
the problem seems to be the fact that they are very well connected in england. dont forget the results of the adn testes are still not in portugal. and its been over two month since they were sent to england.
in a case as high profile as this one, the portuguese police would never indict the parents if they werent sure there was something to it.
the real deal is the fact that england is...england. and we ar just portugal. tiny europe's west coast.
kate maccan wouldnt have done this in spain or the US. it was praia da luz, it sounded easy. it was easy.
overall, i think we shouldnt really talk more about it till there are conclusions.

I know what you mean in a way - the British stiff upper lip and all that, but I am Scottish and live near Glasgow. I know for a fact I would not be able to maintain a stiff upper lip if my child was abducted - but everyone is different and no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.

I agree with Yahooyahoo,and also with you;
As you say,both these towns citizens are very stoical,also it's being said now that the McCanns statements and those of their friends appear to be different because the police couldn't understand English too well and have taken them down wrongly.
Since this new chief of police has come in we are at last getting the truth about whats going on and not the drunken ramblings in the pub on his daily lunch from the last one who was sacked.

" Blessing..." -- let me just please comment on what that "mike ingham" keeps spewing out against the Portuguese all over Y.A. He obviously has something against Portugal but won't tell us what.
I would like him to learn this fact.... England has been convicted of torture in the European Court more often than any other country in Europe. This is a fact, not fiction

Yes good valid point. Difference nationalities have different behaviour patterns. For example have you ever been near an Asian women when she is in labour and about to give birth, the noise and carrying on is unbelievable. However that is how they deal with the act of giving birth.
The McCanns appear the have stoical misdemeanour that I fear has been misinterpreted by many who are not British Nationals.

speaking for the liverpudlians.. well er did you see Reece Jones parents?? or do you remember Denise Bulger? she was in bed sedated... so when it comes to something happening to your kids.. a stoical attitude does not come in to it... when it comes to our children (for sane right minded parents!!) geography doesn't come into it..

The Portuguese police are on record as being liars and some have been charged with torture. I think nettie makes a good point, most hatred against the McCanns is by recent arrivals to the UK not real British people

no for a start the McCanns were never working in heavy industries, the whole of europe outside the UK government spinn can see how guilty the McCanns are not just the Portuguesse.
The behavior of the McCanns has more to do with Clarence mitchels advice then any socialogicqal issue, you are just buying the pro McCann spin
