His playing is above many drummers heads and to understand what he does, you need to spend time with his work to appreciate it. To illustrate this point .... A drummer friend ( a pop/rock player) and I went to a drum clinic at which Tony was on the bill. Others there were Virgil danante, Dennis Chambers (others as well but these two stood out). My friend went to sleep during Tony's segment saying he was boring. What Tony did was play for his whole time, no talk, no cameras, no tapes allowed, his drumming did all the talking for me. To me, it was the most amazing and magicle thing I have seen in my life. I won't even try to explain what he did other then that. It saddens me when drummers talk about some drummers (no names mentioned) as being the best who don't belong to be mentioned beside Tony's name, and I know they are'nt even aware of who he is. Who knows, maybe they would fall asleep when hearing him play.

doubledown..thanx for an intelligent answer. Yes Billy Martin plays very well. Ive liatened to much of thie stuff. I believe the question to ask is could Tony do Billy's gig and vice versa. Answer to first question...Tony would smoke that gig, just ask billy. I'm sure he would not be offended at the thought of one of his heros smokining on his gig.. Answer to second question...No way could Billy come anywhere close wearing Tony's shoes on the many musicle settings Tony has been involved in..There again, I'm sure Billy would not be offended by that statement nor would he try to discredit it. He knows!

Good points Ste a..Steve is a great player,I love his playing but watch his video and see how much of an influence Tony was on him..Tony's the inovator. Steve smith's good bud and fellow Berkly graduate Vinnie Caliuta is another one, but again..Tony's the man, I'm sure they would'nt argue that point. Also, Bill Steward is another..He's kind of a cross between Tony and Jack Dejonnett..another great one.

jeje..I have'nt heard Tony Royester latley..He must be in his 20"s now..We've all seen his solo at age 13 at a MD clinic. He dedicated his perfomance to Tony there. I never heard he took lessons from Tony W. I know this Tony williams was not noted as a teacher. I will say this Tony W acomplished much more then Tony R. by whatever age Tony R. is now. Tony W was playing with Miles (One of the greatest Jazz players of the 20 th century) at age 17. Whats Tony R done of note by this age other then that MD solo. Of sourse I've heard Omar. I've got his training video. Again, He's a great player, but not at Tony W's level.. Man...go look at Tony W's life time body of work. It ends with him going back to colledge and getting his degree in Composition. Tony W's got a lotta catching up to do if he wants to even come close to Tony W. which I doubt if he wants to do. That's his drum hero
