His playing is above many drummers heads and to understand what he does, you need to spend time with his work to appreciate it. To illustrate this point .... A drummer friend ( a pop/rock player) and I went to a drum clinic at which Tony was on the bill. Others there were Virgil danante, Dennis Chambers (others as well but these two stood out). My friend went to sleep during Tony's segment saying he was boring. What Tony did was play for his whole time, no talk, no cameras, no tapes allowed, his drumming did all the talking for me. To me, it was the most amazing and magicle thing I have seen in my life. I won't even try to explain what he did other then that. It saddens me when drummers talk about some drummers (no names mentioned) as being the best who don't belong to be mentioned beside Tony's name, and I know they are'nt even aware of who he is. Who knows, maybe they would fall asleep when hearing him play.

doubledown..thanx for an intelligent answer. Yes Billy Martin plays very well. Ive liatened to much of thie stuff. I believe the question to ask is could Tony do Billy's gig and vice versa. Answer to first question...Tony would smoke that gig, just ask billy. I'm sure he would not be offended at the thought of one of his heros smokining on his gig.. Answer to second question...No way could Billy come anywhere close wearing Tony's shoes on the many musicle settings Tony has been involved in..There again, I'm sure Billy would not be offended by that statement nor would he try to discredit it. He knows!

Good points Ste a..Steve is a great player,I love his playing but watch his video and see how much of an influence Tony was on him..Tony's the inovator. Steve smith's good bud and fellow Berkly graduate Vinnie Caliuta is another one, but again..Tony's the man, I'm sure they would'nt argue that point. Also, Bill Steward is another..He's kind of a cross between Tony and Jack Dejonnett..another great one.

jeje..I have'nt heard Tony Royester latley..He must be in his 20"s now..We've all seen his solo at age 13 at a MD clinic. He dedicated his perfomance to Tony there. I never heard he took lessons from Tony W. I know this Tony williams was not noted as a teacher. I will say this Tony W acomplished much more then Tony R. by whatever age Tony R. is now. Tony W was playing with Miles (One of the greatest Jazz players of the 20 th century) at age 17. Whats Tony R done of note by this age other then that MD solo. Of sourse I've heard Omar. I've got his training video. Again, He's a great player, but not at Tony W's level.. Man...go look at Tony W's life time body of work. It ends with him going back to colledge and getting his degree in Composition. Tony W's got a lotta catching up to do if he wants to even come close to Tony W. which I doubt if he wants to do. That's his drum hero

look, tony williams is hands down one of the greatest drummers/teachers of all time, but he could be put to shame by a number of others, namely tony royster jr. (who was actualy taught for a short period of time by tony williams himself) tony royster could play those complex jazz/funk odd-time chops but at the same time he could absolutley blow you away with his blistering double bass rolls ALL IN THE SAME SONG. and if you like drummers like tony williams check out omar hakim.

Keith Moon and John Bohnam were the best...EVER!!

And YES, I have heard of Tony Williams *smart guy*, but I still think my two were the best ever. Keith Moon was faster than a drum machine long before anyone else... I guess I just prefer rock drumming rather to jazz/r&b drumming. and if you want to go there, Buddy Rich was better than Tony williams. you asked for our opinion, so if you don't like ours, then you shouldn't have asked the question in the first place.

I think Billy Martin of Medeski Martin & Wood is such a phenominal drummer, and definitely my favorite. It's hard to compare as who is the best because they are both great.

Check out some MMW and let me know what you think. Listen to those beat patterns, complex stuff.

Medeski Martin & Wood (or MMW) is a US jazz trio originally formed in 1991, consisting of John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums and percussion, and Chris Wood on double bass and bass guitar.

i'm a extensive Gwynn fan, yet I nevertheless supply the sting to Ted. human beings do below-cost Gwynn's protection because of the fact of his portly shape, yet they ignore that he had CF selection and a RF arm. Gwynn grow to be probably the main clever, expert hitter of his time yet Williams grow to be between the perfect hitters interior the trendy age. additionally, the only knock I had on Gwynn grow to be that he had a particularly narrow convenience zone as to his hitting function. Like Ichiro, who refuses to go out of the lead-off spot, Gwynn frequently does not make the changes while the area talked approximately as for it. while a pop-fly might deliver a guy abode from 3B, or a pulled grounder to the perfect suited facet might circulate a guy from 2nd to 3rd, Gwynn grow to be nevertheless attempting to hit those little line photographs previous the SS. although I on no account observed Williams play, I even have heard he grow to be an exceedingly reliable situational hitter. i've got faith that, plus his potential extra advantageous than makes up for Gwynn's actual advantages.

He's definately hard to match. He was an incredible player and all around musician. Anyone not willing to listen to him and take note is not a serious drummer in my opinion. And anyone who says that Keith Moon was a better drummer is a moron. Good question mate, but too hard to answer properly in my opinion. Steve Smith I think is close.
