Let me try to set this up correctly. Stay with me...

When someone speaks, how do you process what they have said? If someone, for example, says the word "chair" to you, do you see a chair in your "mind" or do you see the word "chair?"

I suppose for brief instance i see an image subconciously.
but in essence I 'hear' the word.
It's almost like your teacher reading a story to you as a student, you can actually 'visualize' the green hills, the river, and whats going on in the story. and probably do well in a summary.

also, personaly, when I hear the word briefcase, for just about the same subconcious instance I visualize briefs, folded neatly in a ..briefcase. haha my point is that we associate sounds to pictures, symbols to symbols etc, hard to explain.
another example is watermark, i actualy think of and see water. (albeit for a nanosecond..or somewhere aaround ther).

to sumerise, we are constnly inturpreting and 'figuering out' the input that we recieve. th fct that you can uderstand this statment is proof.

great Q, sorry my answer a bit long

cheers
