If they are not adults, then how can they serve in the military and make an adult decision to join and die for YOUR freedoms?

An 18 year old can volunteer to drink a draft but can't be drafted. They can volunteer to die but have to do it sober.

What the heck is your point. Every time I hear this childish bit of nonsense I think "the question IS the answer", lack of judgment.

Immaturity is the exact reason you can join the military at 18 (used to be 17, I assume it has changed). Kids that age will do dumb things when ordered to. Mature individuals will frag the idiot who gave the order... and have a beer.

It has to do with federal government bribing state/local governments. The drinking age is actually state law. Up until just before Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans drinking age was 18. Federal government wanted the drinking age raised, and so offered the states money to fix their roads if they would raise the age. Every state changed the law to get money. This money, also, came with lowering the speed limits on roads, mind you. The speed limits used to be higher. That's pretty much how it happened. Personally, as a 19 year old, I don't care what the drinking age is. There are pros and cons to it being 18. But, then again, what does it matter. It's not like 18 year olds don't drink anyway. PS- if you are in the military and under 21, you are allowed to drink on bases.

At eighteen, you are not mature enough to make a wise and calculated decision as to serve in the military or not (that is the way governments want it) just as you are not mature enough to drink responsibly. Military enlistment age should be raised to 21 also, but then there would be a lot fewer recruits. You get the picture?

I agree. Its not fair that someone is considered an adult at 18 but cant drink until they're 21. Solution? Raise everything to 21.

We fought the same battle and won it during The Nam back in the 60s and 70s. If enough folks come forward with the issue again it's possible that we could push the pendulum back that way again.

FYI, GIs stationed in foreign countries where the legal drinking age is under 21 are permitted to drink at whatever age is in force locally or 18 if the legal age is lower than 18 as it is in some countries.

Because an 18 year old in the military is trained to operate the weapon they are using in a controlled atmosphere. A drunk 18 year old behind the wheel of a vehicle is ...well....either suicide or a prison sentence. See the difference?

Agreed.

This was brought on in the '80's, when the Feds threatened to withhold highway funding to states who didn't change their drinking age to 21.

Bad law.

It's because a bunch of cackling hens at MADD convinced lawmakers that a 21 drinking age is good, and the lawmakers were all too accommodating.

Lawrence is dead right.
I should add that the politicians did this to look good to MADD.
