Both military and politcal progress in Iraq is undeniable. The political situation has lagged, but that's expected. It's happened in all re-forming countries, just like it did in the US after the Revolutionary war.

Based on this, there will be troop withdrawal in '08, instigated by George Bush himself.

Do you think this will hurt the Dems? They seem to need bad things to happen to America in order for themselves to prosper.

Well if the public would actually think and try to give themselves an explaination as to why we are there, the dems will be fine.

It's a completely misguided, money-driven war.

Hey GW!! While you're rigging up a democracy for Iraq, recession is looming in the states. The dollar is becoming less and less valuable every day. There are 40 million people with no health care.

Lets fix up our democracy first, no?

And to the person above me, this is not a war that can be "won" or "lost"..mainly because our enemy is mainly in Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, etc. While we are "liberating" Iraq, al queda and the taliban are plotting against us.

We're not hated by the middle east because we're rich or free; we've been policing their world, and they're reacting.

That's actually a good question. The answer is no, however--improvement--even major imporvement--in Iraq is not going to hurt the Democrats in 2008.

The reason is simple: although Iraq is front and center statge, it is far from the only issue that voters are concerned about. Here's how thisscenario (unlikely though it is) wwould play out:

First--under this scenariio, Iraq would become LESS of a concern to voters--they will turn their attention to other things. The GOP would try to put their "achievement in Iraq" at the center--butt would not suceed (in fact, it could easily backfire, by creating the impression they are avoiding other issues).

But, the key is thoe other issues--and the GOP is simply vulnerable on far too many points. Corruption, health care, lack of regulation of imports (those lead-painted toys, for instance), their support of Bush's warrentless surveillance, and at least a dozen other issues.Add in the discrediting effect of the Bush administration handling of environmental issues, failures in caring for veterans, Katrina, etc. And the the economy. Don't get me wrong--there isn't going to be some kind of terrible collapse. But the odds aare we will be in a recession next NOvember.

Finally--and this is BIG--immigration. Regardless of one's opinion of how the problem should be handled--it is ano-win for the GOP. The reaon: they were in charge in Congress for 12 years--and did nothing. The Democrats can lay the blame entirely on them--and make it stick.

Al that's not intended as a "rant"--I'm just pointing otu that the GOP and ANY Republican candidate have way too much baggage from the Bush years stuck to them to win in 2008.

Those 'obvious change of fortunes' you speak about are marginal at best and have come about because of an unprecedented build up of 175,000 US troops and almost the same number of private army troops. Political advancement is still almost nonexistent. I have no doubt that Bush will withdrawal some troops in '08 in order to help the GOP in the upcoming election but I see that as being done because of the political pressure being applied to the GOP from the Dems.

Wishful thinking on your part.

There is no "progress in Iraq". You can't take a wink of an eye in a long long process and suggest that this represents the entire process.

Iraq is just re-arming and re-grouping for civil war. Nothing will change there.

There has been no progress in Iraq.

The unemployment rate in Iraq remains above 50%.

So long as that is the case there will be no progress in Iraq no matter how many troops we put there.

If the Iraq occupation is still ongoing come November 2008, it will only help the Democrats.

The Iraq war has little to do with me being a democrat. I think it is no longer THE issue. I am more concerned with economics and our position in the world. I am also worried about balancing our protection against terrorism with our protection of rights. The deficit and foreign debt are also major concerns.

yes. no offense, but either way, if the dems or republicans lead our country after the next election....there's going to be a bunch of issues arising..........and more bad decision will be made also. and i agree w/ you........besides, the dems have been getting all the attention on the news these days....i mean, where are the republicans??

Even if you're right, and we somehow manage to withdraw troops in 2008, I don't think troop withdrawal will help or hurt anyone. The Republicans and most of the Democrats will still look like idiots for getting us into an unwinnable war that cost countless lives.

I'll grant you the military progress (although the "surge" is ending, so we'll see how that progress goes), but you're going to need to be more specific about where there has been much political progress. The Sunni, Shia, and Kurds are all pretty much still fighting each other.

media (print, tv and radio) are not free in U.S. ( even though we think it is) there is biased news and news is called.. news shows.. unless we see some news from neutral country .. we cannot know the state of land(unless you are there) reformation takes time.. but years.. if you read last weeks story about normalcy in iraq ( with segregation of sects) its a bad turn.. its turning in to 3 countries..
also I also found it hard to believe that in 2007, U.S. population still thinks that women cannot work as president of a country..
