Crossword puzzles. While mainly educational, they are inexpensive, enjoyable, sometime funny and range from easy to hard. Solving cryptograms is another source. Some puzzle books contain a variety of puzzles: crossword, word seek, cryptograms, mirror images, brick by brick, mazes, etc.
Try it one time but don't get discouraged if a lot of the definitions are strange to you. Good luck.

Aquariums.

Reading up on the theory of filtration and nutrients is very educational. And small bowls with shrimp or snails and plants are very inexpensive(never put fish in bowls).

Watching small tanks flourish is very rewarding and I find water in my home to be very tranquil and meditative.
