Turn off computer, restart & press F11 several times. This will bring your computer back to new, however, you'll need to go to Windows Updates & re-download the various up-dates,that were released since you owned it,it may be as many as 73.

I have a Dell Dimension 3100 with XP Home SP2 and this is the way to get it back to factory defaults. Now remember this will delete all your files and folders your computer will be exactly as it was when you first got it with nothing but XP on the drive as the default system.

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR SYSTEM DISKS / ALL THE SOFTWARE FOR YOUR HARDWARE.

PRODUCT RECOVERY RECOVERY KEY.
SERVICE TAG FOUND ON THE TOWER.

IF YOU HAVE NOT GOT ALL OF THE ABOVE FORGET IT AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECOVER YOUR SYSTEM WITHOUT A LOT OF TROUBLE.

REMEMBER YOU WILL LOOSE EVERYTHING ALL YOUR SETTINGS / YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION EVERYTHING. AS GOOD AS NEW SO TO SPEAK.

If you have stuff you want to keep save it to DVD/CD/Flash/Floppy.

It's as simple as this it will take a bit of time to complete.
Restart your PC just at boot up press Ctrl + F11 opt for RESTORE, and follow the prompts you will be given an option to abort once or twice!?!?!? just continue.

The Best of Luck, But be sure you have all the software etc, as I told you there is no going back. It's a very TOTAL format. You can not say that you have not been cautioned.

If this is an off of the shelf computer, ie, a dell or compaq, etc, then all you need to do is run the restore software. It came on a set of cd's or on a partition on your hard drive that is usually called "D". This software will restore the system back to factory fresh. If you no longer have this software it can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site.

It depends on what brand and model of computer you have.
Big corporations often give you a set of optical media (CD/DVD) or they have a second partition on the hard drive that will do what you want.
Giving you precise step by step instructions is imposible, becasue they vary by Manufacturer and model. But the general logic is the same.
You boot your computer with the provided CD or you press a key at boot up to get to the second partition and you get some sort of menu with options that will ask you if you want to erase every thing and reload the system.

If you have a restore cd just install it and follow the instructions which come up,
some now don't come with discs to save money contact the makers and they will send you discs free we got some from dell free and it worked ok.

Wipe the hard drive and start again - only way.

System Restore will only work if you created a Restore Point when you first go it - if you didn't - then a fresh install is the best way

Without knowing what your problem is, it's difficult to offer a solution. I'd check the Microsoft knowledge base, before resorting to reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling XP.

Try Start, Set Program Access and Defaults and set to computer Manufacturer, although you do not say the reason why you need to reset it.

The question is why do want to put it back to its factory settings? You can do this using Sysprep but it is a long and complicated process. It will probably be quicker to fix your current problem without the hassle of putting everything back to its factory settings.

Dep. is completely correct only one catch...It whipes your hardrive COMPLETELY...You will need to put windows back on. I don't know if they have changed this any recently, but it used to be that you had to get a seperate cd to reinstall windows, but it is possable that that is part of the package...I know that when i whiped my hardrive, I had to get my dad to put everthing on and it took a couple of days.
