When we moved into our new house the previous owners had untreated indoor/outdoor pets.. So, when the house was vacant for a few weeks the house had a total infestation.... !!! It was terrible.. We had NOT brought our dog to the house..
I bought about 12 lbs. of baking soda and mixed it with about 3 lbs. of iodized restaurant salt. Sprinkled the carpets with the mixture and let it sit for acouple days... It's not going to harm people OR pets. Then I vacuumed like MAD ! The baking soda smothers larve and the salt punctures any eggs... As an added bonus the previous owners of the house were heavy smokers.. So it also deodorized the carpets and the salt picked up any loose dirt... Then we brought the dog into the house for acouple days BEFORE we put her flea drops on her.. We use BIOSPOT available at Petsmart it's about $15 for a four month supply and we haven't had a flea problem since.....
We also did a round of foggers.. Just don't forget to do the basement or the fleas will also "flea" down there !
Good luck

In areas with a high concentration of fleas, keep a bowl of soapy water below a table lamp. The fleas will leap towards the light at night, jump into the water and drown.

Fleas are HORRIBLE!!! I hate them. I have had to deal with this problem so many times. I found some links on an all natural website. I will send you the links I have used these remedies myself and they totally work. The best part is they are safe for our furry friends. Good luck with the pests.
PEACE

Sprinkle dry borax on the carpet, upholstery, leave for 3 days vaccum up, the fleas will eat the borax causing them to dehydrate & die. This method will continue to work until carpet & upholstery is wet cleaned. You will need to treat your pets fo fleas also.

Get yourself a bug bomb and bomb your house for fleas. You have to leave for a few hours, so at that time, you can go get your animals flea bathed at the vets.

first of all, you have to de-flea your animals...then you will have to get the spray from the vets to spray around your home and repeat this in a couple of weeks...don't steam clean your carpets or furniture, as this will bring out the hatchlings and create more fleas.

Front line your animals then bomb your house. Fleas are a HUGE problem this year!
If you don't have the money for front line then citrus dish detergent works well too:)
