Acid + alcohol ----> ester + water is known as esterification.

Warm the acid and alcohol together with a little concentrated sulphuric acid.

Alcohol to carboxylic acid (it has to be a primary alcohol) is achieved by warming under reflux with acidified potassium dichromate(VI).

Alcohol to ester is esterification. Reactants: alcohol + carboxylic acid.

Alcohol to carboxylic acid is oxidation. Reactants: alcohol + oxidising agent.

There are a range of conditions to do both of these reactions, eg. using enzymes or other catalysts.
