I believe so especially in sugar plantations where you would have a couple of white family households and dozens maybe hundreds of African Americans working.

No. However, there were more African Americans than whites in some counties in the South.

In some southern states there were very large populations of slaves but South Carolina is the only state I can think of that had a larger slave population than white population at some point.
