Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, marking the begining of Christmas shopping. Many stores open there doors really early and offer huge discounts. The first reference to Black Friday came after the stock market crashed, when people were spending large amounts of money despite a very poor economy.
One that you may not know about is cyber Monday, which is the Monday following Black Friday marking the first day of online Christmas shopping. This is the day that many people begin online purchases at work because of faster internet speeds and no children being able to see what they are doing.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, where it is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. Since Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, Black Friday may be as early as the 23rd and as late as the 29th of November. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employers give the day off.[citation needed] Retailers often decorate for the Christmas season weeks beforehand. Many retailers open very early (typically 5 am) and offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to draw people to their stores. Although Black Friday, as the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season at least since the start of the modern Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the term "Black Friday" has been traced back only to the 1970s. "Black Friday" was originally so named because of the heavy traffic on that day, although most contemporary uses of the term refer instead to it as the beginning of the period in which retailers are in the black (i.e., turning a profit)

Black Friday isnt a holiday, it is the day after thanksgiving and the term black refers to the economics aspect of it, of a company being either in the red or the black. There are some business that will make the entire year profitable by the sales from that single Friday alone (hence the term black Friday)

It's the name for the day after Thanksgiving. It's not a holiday, it is the first day of the Christmas shopping season. Stores run all kinds of sales on this day and open crazy early or stay open very late. Most people take a long weekend off of work for Thanksgiving. (Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday of November). The black in Black Friday is an accounting term, most stores are in the black from the massive sales they've made.
edit: one of your earlier posters refered to "Black Friday" as when the stock market crashed in 1929--that day was "Black Tuesday", usually "black" days refer to times of tragedy, but in this case of "Black Friday" it doesn't.

Its the day after thanksgiving when everyone runs to all the stores and malls and buys everything they can get their hands on. There are ridiculous sales and ridiculous people. I tend to stay home on black friday purely because i dont have the energy to handle all of the other customers. Im pretty sure that Americans are the only ones to do it because were the only ones to take so much time off for Thanksgiving.

It's not really a celebration. It's the day right after Thanksgiving...its the day when lots of stores open REALLY early in the morning and have
hee-uge sales...as much as 90% off. People do most of their Christmas shopping that day. My mom & I get up around 3-4 am to go shopping. Its SO much fun...I'm not sure why its only in the US, though...

It's not a celebration. It is the first day for shopping for the Christmas season that goes all day and night. The Friday after thanksgiving. All night + Friday = Black Friday.
