Medically, no one knows what a dream or a nightmare is. It is believed that its just your brain running over things on your mind. So if you have been down or worried you are probably more likely to have a nightmare than an nice dream. Of course if you watch a horror film before bed about Aliens taking over your body (for example) you have a higher chance that you will have a horrible dream about Aliens. You may be able to 'control' your nightmares. I used to dream I was being chased and one night I decided (in my dream) not to run and I 'faced' the person chasing me. I never had the nightmare again.

A nightmare is a dream, but only the unpleasant side to it. Nightmares are usually caused by either physical causes or phsycological causes such as stress. From what I remember I read, it is also caused by eating a lot of cheese or bannanas.

As for what you actually "feel" during a nightmare - no one actually knows. You could get a close enough accurate answer by waking someone from their sleep during REM (rapid-eye movement). When this happens, the sleeper can vividly recall how the dream went, what happened etc.

I hope that answered it.

If you dream a nightmare, it usually wakes you up and it has been really scary.
If you live a nightmare as they call it sometimes - it is something that happens so terrible you can't deal with it.
