just bought a new duel fueled range cooker, hobs are gas, ovens electric...right all the gas fittings are there, ive took the gas pipe off the old cooker, cleaned it up and it fits the new range. now in the instruction book it says fit with non setting gas sealent to the cooker, the other end is like a push on bayonet fitting. right how much is this sealent, and have i been quoted too much at £20.00 to connect it,surely looking at it you smother on this sealant on the threads, tighten up the nut, connect to the supply, rub a bit of diluted washing up liquid round the joint to check for any gas escape and job done.or am i been too full of myself here.with it been our first extravagance, the wifes a bit unsure, but ive done our others no problem, and i can see where shes coming from,so any input welcome please.

Forgive this RIGGS, and certainly I hope you resolve it.

I'm only a GAS expert in the effect food has on my digestive system.

Certainly you've gotten valid suggestions; other than having the wife TEST the appliance; although I might stand back and THROW a match?

Hopefully we will hear more from ya, but not in any Medical questions categories. G'day mate.

You are correct in your description of how to connect it. However, £20 is actually cheap to connect it - considering how much CORGI charge to become and stay registered and the training that goes with it. In London area's you'd be looking at £80 approx. Also, should there be any problems in the future and you damage the property etc through gas escaping, your insurance etc may be void as you are supposed to have a CORGI registered engineer connect these things. Check the guarantee on the cooker - it may state the same. However, legally there is nothing to stop you doing it. Your choice xxxx

£20 too dear! Try £60, that is the average, it is illegal to diy, the cooker needs an anti tilt mechanism, needs to be pressure tested at the burners, the thermostat and fsd should be checked for operation, along with any other safety devices, the metre should be tested and the cooker gas rated, checked for adequate room size, and/or ventilation, then it has to be certified with corgi, it is also illegal to use detergents on gas fittings. So given that you knew none of this, and don't have the knowledge or experience to do this, where did you want to start?

Wickes sell some PTFE tape for gas installations. This is besides the ordinary stuff. I just typed in 'sealants' into the search engine and it came up with several DIY outlets.

i'm no gas expert but is the hose a silvery flexi hose? the stuff your being asked to smear on the threads is a locking compound. easy enough for anybody to use. but your no gas fitter neither is you missus. pay the 20 quid for the corgi regestired expert.
