First before you put it in the tree stand, cut off about an inch off the bottom to ensure the tree can absorb the water, after placing in the tree stand fill with water and add an aspirin, (will help to keep it fresh longer) be sure to place your tree away from heating vents/radiators, when decorating, use small lights so they don't dry out the tree, water every day, add an aspirin once a week.

After placing the stand where you want it, put either fine dirt or sand in it before the Christmas tree. Cutting about 1" off the bottom will allow the tree trunk access to the water. Using a small garden watering can, keep the water level around 3/4" from the top of the stand. Garden shops also sell a packet of nutrient to put into the water. Keep away from direct heat. This should keep the tree alive for the longest period of time.

Drill three small holes in the trunk the same distance away from each other around the trunk.
Then put dowels into the holes. This not only allows the tree to absorb more water it also helps to keep the tree stable in the bucket.
Also take out as much water as you can after two weeks and add fresh water so it doesn't get stale.

They sell this stuff and you put it in the water whenever you whatever the christmas tree. Ours usually stays alive for a month, sometimes more.

Just make sure there is always a lot of water in the holder and keep it away from hot dry areas otherwise the needles will dry out and fall off.

before you put it up, cut an inch off the bottom of the trunk. When putting it up, make sure the bottom of the trunk is not on the bottom of the stand. it needs to be suspended about 1/2 inch to allow it to absorb water.
