Iowa is the first place people choose a candidate. It is important because of the nature of campaigning. In Iowa, you have candidates going to people's homes, shaking people's hands, meeting people face to face, and having substantive conversations. It gives us Iowans a chance to really get to know a particular candidate. In large states such as California, Florida, or New York, the only way the candidates can reach people is through mass advertising, and people don't get the same chance to really get a feel for someone, all they get is a commercial message. That is why it is important and it works.

By Iowa Law, they are the first to hold a caucus nationally. So its kinda a launching grounds for candidates. Interesting fact though... Iowa is often considered a "bunch of Hicks" however Iowas citizens rank in the top 5% nationwide in litteracy and other educational marks.

Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada and the big four. They show what candidates are really possibilities. The rest of the states kind of follow suit.
That's why it's a big deal for Obama being the leader in Iowa and the gap closing in with the others. The only state of those 4 that I think he may lose is Nevada.

Because it's the first to hold a caucus in the election cycle. A lot of the other states are rightfully trying to take Iowa's influence away. In my opinion, the "Super Tuesday" primaries on Feb 5 will tell the whole story.

They're first to hold the caucases and first to pick the nominees. Then the nominees go on to other states to see how they will do.
But other first states are important also, like New Hampshire.
