Romania..........sorry don´t know.
Russia.......I collaborate with one of the charities that brings poor children from Belarus over to Europe in the summer. These children still live with the problems created by Chernobyl 20 years later. They live in incredible poverty surrounded by contaminated land. THe purpose of these visits to europe is to give their immune system a boost in summer to help them fight off illness. Each trip away from contaminated land gives them an extra 2 years life expectancy.
Some of the children are orphans and asome are not. Mnay have alcoholic parents. I have had Igor stay with me for 3 yrs running. He had never seen running water, escalators, big shops, computers........so many things we take for granted. It has been an incredible experience for me to be able to help him anfd I continue to help his family during the winter.
I live in Spain but I now that there are many groups who do the same in the U.K. These groups appreciate any help that you can give them. Not necessarily taking a child for the summer, or financially but helping them out with their activities and organization. Maybe you could find a local group and offer your help? When i was researching the subject I found many British groups on the internet.
I have collaborated before with international charities and the diffrence with this kind of work is that you establish contact with a particular needy child or family. You can see the difference that your help makes.
If you are willing to help there are many ways you can. Good luck.

My wife and I adopted an orphan from Romania and donated medical supplies directly to an orphanage. It is very difficult to get aid to the orphanages because the system is corrupted at every level.
I'd do some research and donate to a nonprofit from a western country (such as doctors without borders). Be careful with your donations, because many charity organizations are not regulated and much of the money ends up in the hands of those who are asking for donations.
I'd also consider donating to the Gates foundation, because this organization is very effective at meeting the needs of people.

This is really a great organization. Their operation Christmas child is awesome and I have some friends that have actually gone and delivered the Christmas boxes personally. I saw a video they had of doing it and it was just really incredible. Tough with some of these organizations because I honestly don't believe all the money goes where it is suppose to but because I know people personally that have done work for Samaritans purse I feel comfortable donating. My kids love doing the Christmas boxes every year. We go to the Dollar tree and usually can do about 20 boxes for less then $100. And it really touches a childs life.

may your god bless you sister: but i would suggest not to give anything or do anything on their behalf. corrupt officials ect. the kids are made to cry for camera just so the "carers" can get money to spend it on vodka, they dont really care for the kids they just care about their jobs. i detest so-called 3rd world poverty, its the scumbags who run the country that steal food from the kids mouths. hire yourself a 40 foot lorry, fill it with toys and food and have it driven by yourself or a person who has a hgv licence and deliver it right to the door of the orphanges.
