I was a Mac dealer and now I currently use Windows as an operating system. I don't like Windows and look forward to the day when Linux has enough drivers to support the applications and hardware I like to use. Macs have some advantage in certain niche applications. If you are in that category you will know it and select a Mac. Otherwise, most likely the current Windows based machines (including Dell) will serve you just as well for less money.

An Apple Mac will cost you a little more than a Dell, but it is a superior quality item and will last a lot longer (and look a lot better too!).
Mac OS X is more stable than Windows Vista, easier to use and (as previously mentioned) you don't have problems with SpyWare, Virii etc.
The big downside for Macs is that they have less software than PCs - or so it is claimed. If you compare Mac only software with PC only software that may be true, but since Macs can run PC software quite easily the maths is simple ...
PC = PC software
Macs = Mac software PLUS PC software
... so Macs have much more software available to them than PCs!
However, you have to bear in mind that there are thousands of really rubbish programmes out there, and only the really good programmes get ported over to the Mac.
MS Office is both Mac and PC, but the Mac version has some extras that PCs don't have and is easier to use.
Ditto for most other "good quality" software packages. It is rare to find a Mac programme that is of poor quality.
I use Windows at work and a Mac at home. I can do stuff about 10-15% faster on a Mac because of the better design of the software.
All Mac programmes use the same keyboard short cuts, so if you can use one programme you can use them all. PC users have to spend hours reading through manuals to work out how to use a programme, Mac users just load it up and away you go!
I haven't looked at a software manual in over 10 years!
Dell make good kit (I have a 24" Dell monitor) and I'm sure their computer "boxes" are fine.
The problem isn't Dell vs Mac, it's Windows vs Mac OSX.
If Dell could run Mac OSX then they would have a top rate product.

I've owned nothing but Macs since 2005. I will never buy another Windows PC as long as I live. Macs are an incredible value compared to Windows PCs. You might pay a little bit more, but you get so much more for your money. Ask anyone who owns a Mac, they'll tell you how much they love it. The only people who have any objections to buying a Mac are either PC users who have never touched a Mac or people who rely on the problems that plague PC users for their income.

Apple Mac hardware is made much better and looks better too. Dells tend to be made of really cheap plastic and are annoying to open and upgrade.
