i have 2 ferrets - logan and loki - and they're mustelids, related to skunks not rodents so they qualify.

i'd really like a llama (gotta love their faces) so maybe someday i'll be able to answer this question with one of those too.

Well, you only have a few other options. Guinea pigs are out, since you think rats are big, well guinea pigs get quite big too, plus they need a huge cage. You might consider mice. They don't bite often and the females will almost never fight. However they are more of a "watch" pet instead of a "play with" pet, they are very small and also can be real jumpy or skittish. You could also go with gerbils, they are a lot like mice except for bigger, so they're easier to handle. They also smell less, which is a plus. You could also think about degus, they are illegal in some place though. They get a little bigger than say a gerbil but I don't think they get as big as rats. I don't know much about them other than that. Whichever pet you choose, make sure to do a lot of research. Overall, based on what you said, I would say that a pair of gerbils would be best for you. (Just make sure they are the same gender and come from the same littler so they will not fight!)

I used to have two giant African land snails. They were called Alex and Mandingo. They were great. Then they bred and I had about three hundred of the things... they were so cute though. And the adults were gorgeous when they were wet. Their shells were all shiny and colourful. Sigh.
