1. How could a satellite be placed in orbit around Mars &
2. How can it stay in orbit around Mars?

I think there are currently 4 man-made satellites in orbit around Mars. There are links to each from the link below. I guess any of those pages will give you some specifics about how to launch a satellite to Mars.

Yes a satellite can be placed in orbit around mars. More or less the procedure would be to launch into space from Earth, make the trip to mars, slow down, and then enter orbit around mars. As for how it can stay in orbit simple answer is phsyics.

How could ..? ..

We do it the same way we put up earth satellites (chemical rockets)

How can .. ? = Gravity

The satellite is moving very fast .. gravity pulls it back .. if you adjust the speed of the satellite to EXACTLY the right speed, the force of gravity will 'bends' the satellites path into orbit around the planet .. (same as Phobos, Deimos and the Moon orbits)
