Curious if a CDL is worth getting for a job whole going to college. What are the requirements? What on your driving record determines if you can get a CDL or not?

Thanks

A DUI will prevent you from being able to get a CDL.

Some states have unique rules also.

In IL, you can drive a fire truck as a member of a volunteer fire department without a CDL, or a family owned farm truck hauling your family's farm products....

Now if you are doing one of those online courses you could probably do it. But if you are going to classes it might not be the best thing for you.
If it is something to do while you are college I would not suggest it. It would almost be a waste of time for you.
The requirements are you have to be at least 18 to obtain a CDL to drive in the state that you live in (and only the state you live in). You can not go outside of that state. To drive out of the state you live in you must be 21 years of age. The only way your driving record will affect you is most companies want no more than 3 moving violations in three years (speeding, reckless driving, etc.). And no DUI's. There are a few companies that will hire you with 1 DUI ( my brother had one before he started driving). I could not find any info that said you could not obtain a CDL with a DUI or a drug charge. If you have one of these you can not get you Haz-mat.

You must acquire a CDL learners license and hold it for 30 days before going for a CDL license. You must take your drivers test on the type of vehicle you will be driving, class A or class B. A good driving record is important since not too many companies will hire someone with a poor record. You must be trained by the company you are working for or be trained by a company that trains CDL drivers, these companies usually charge big bucks for the training. The license itself costs more than a standard drivers license plus there is a charge for each endorsement. Somewhere in all this you must pass a physical to get your medical card and then have a physical every two years.

I have had my C.D.L. for 12 years now and its probably the smartest thing I ever did. It is a very good way to make good money. You can be 18 and drive intrastate, but you must be 21 to do any interstate driving. You must also be in reasonably good health and be able to pass a physical. Most employers won't hire convicted felons, but some do. I don't believe anything on your driving record could keep you from obtaining a CDL, but most employers wont hire you with more than 3 moving violations, or an at-fault accident.

Peace....

Man, GET IT! If nothing else, you can always fall back on it if you can not secure a job in your field after you graduate. I have had my CDL for about 2 years now, and I also have a college degree. I wish I had my CDL earlier, because I could not always count on my B.S. to get me a good paying long-term job.

If you are over 18, in good health, can speak and read english, do not have a crimal record, and are not addicted to drugs (lol), you are good to GO.

If you are contemplating getting a job driving trucks after college, yes, it might be a good idea. On the other hand, if this is only for the time you are in college, and you aren't intending to drive trucks for a living, then why waste the time on it?!
BUT!!
If later on in life, you might join the local Fire Department, and wish to drive the trucks--many states require CDL's to drive Fire trucks! And some states require them for driving large motor homes, or dump trucks--so its a toss-up.
And, if your previous driving record has some bad items in it, that might preclude your chances of getting one! Speeding infractions comes to mind, as does hit and run, reckless driving records.
