Ha! Ha! GOOD one! No British cars dominated any world market, there were too many restrictions for them to compete internationally very well. Very socialistic business, so they made poor cars usually. While the Brits have some fantastic marques, none ever "dominated" a market, just held certain market shares, like Rolls, Bentley, MG, etc. Their cars are generally like their food - bland, but have some good points.

One thing that is interesting, though, is that the Brits had a HUGE kit car climate over there after WWII, many people actually built their own cars from kits,or modified existing ones to improve them. The TVR started out as a kit, then was so good, it became a regular production ( albeit in small numbers ) model. The Sunbeam Tiger, with Ford V-8, was another mash-up that was a smash-up hit. Considering the lack of innovative automobiles due to the restrictive government business climate, it showed how innovative the average ( or above-average? ) auto-inclined British citizen was, or had to be, to get a truly decent car. Actually, my '72 AMC Gremlin has a sunroof , large canvas type, that was imported from England, and used on not just AMC, but also Plymouth Dusters and other cars, maybe even GM , too, due to it's huge size. Not sure if it's the same one that was used on the VW bug, the large roll-back type, but might have been. I know AMC used it for all their large sunroof opening cars. So you can't fault the innovativeness of the UK folk, that's for sure!

Great question! Yes, British car manufacturers are declining now. There are still old ones like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, though. I love Aston Martin's cars and it would be shocking if every brilliant car manufacturer close down. But i don't think it will happen unless there's no petroleum for cars one day... :) All the "extinct" names you mentioned made some nice cars in the past years. What really happen to them??? And why are there so many that are taken over by foreign manufacturers? Let us pray that high quality car manufacturers will return to UK and make her proud. Long live Famous British Car Manufacturers!

The Mini. MG is rarely heard of in some countries, Aston and Jaguar are not that famous in some countries. Even Rolls Royce is rarely heard by some people in this world. Mini is probably the most heard of accorss the world, especially thanks to Mr.Bean.

I can't think of any truly British built cars . Even Morgan are using B.M.W. engines now!
I don't think any British manufacturers dominate any market anymore.

I would have said 'Rolls Royce' but are they still British owned? Maybe now it is Aston Martin.
